He was but twenty-two years of age when he determined to seek his fortune among the gold hills of California. So he bid his friends adieu, started for New York, and set sail in the Spring of '62 on board the "North Star.' After a pleasant voyage, arrived safely at the Isthmus, and on the Pacific side took passage on the "Sierra Nevada," arriving in San Francisco hale, young, ambitious, and hearty. The young man determined to do something for himself, and being full of what Californians familiarly call "grit," he started for the mountains. After considerable speculating, and not a little rambling, he finally wound up in Idaho. Having had a good common school education, and being naturally fond of the journalistic profession, he was not long in that undeveloped country before he started a newspaper known to-day as the Idaho Weekly Avalanche. He was almost eight years on the frontier of that territory, and many strange stories are told of his heroism and bravery, before he became an editor. He was familiarly known as "Old Hill," and while in that locality he was Sheriff, County Clerk and County Commissioner. I do not think I could speak more intelligently of his past life than to embody in this short sketch a complimentary notice of his departure from among his early associates, written by a cotemporary fellow journalist: "Mr. Hill has spent ten or twelve of the best years of his life in assisting to build up and heroically battling for the best interests of Idaho Territory--first as frontiersman, and next in following the more congenial and noble profession of journalism.
