The peculiarity of its construction has arisen from a wish to assist the memory; and, in the psalms, is confined altogether to such as consist of detached maxims, and where there is no close connexion between the sentiments. I have in vain sought for a version of this psalm, which, as.originally written, I could altogether approve; and I have, at length, been compelled to insert one with many alterations of my own. I have condensed several stanzas, and, by leaving out the weaker and more paraphrastic parts, produced, I flatter myself, a correct and pleasing representation of the original. 1. My God! to thee I lift my soul, I put my trust in thee; 2. Let not my enemies controul Or triumph over me. 3. Let none who call upon thy name Confusion e'er oppress: Let those be overwhelm'd with shame, Who, without cause, transgress. 4. Show me thy paths, thy ways unfold, Thy truth to me display; 5. Thee my salvation I behold, My only hope and stay! 6. Thy former mercies call to mind, Let them remember'd be; Thou to my fathers, Lord, wert kind, Be still the same to me. 7. Pardon for sins of days long flown I ask with sighs and tears; O pardon them, nor them alone, But sins of riper years. 8. Upright and good art thou, O Lord, And ever wilt incline Sinners to love thy holy word, And trace thy paths divine. 9. Thou wilt, O Lord, for those provide, On thee their cares who cast; Thou wilt the meek and humble guide To Heaven, their home, at last. 10. Mercy and truth for those shall wake Who thy blest laws obey: 11. O pardon me, for thy dear sake, And wash my guilt away! 12. What man is he who fears the Lord, And in his ways would live? To him his God shall light afford--Shall peace and wisdom give. 13. His soul shall ever dwell at ease, Whilst others feel distress; ...
