The whole ten of the virgins, you remember, had lamps, and for a time they all had light in them; but the five wise virgins only had F oil in their vessels with their lamps, and these burnt on when the others went out. James. By this I understand that those only who have love in the vessels of their hearts, can comply with the Lord's command, "Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven." Elsie. But, father, how was it that the foolish virgins had lamps, and for a little while had light in them? Father. The foolish people, Elsie, are they who get the light of truth into the lamp of their understandings, and who haven't the wisdom to acquire at the same time love for the deeds which the truth teaches, and whose interest, therefore, in religious subjects, although bright enough for a time, soon dies away, and leaves them in spiritual darkness. James. You mean, father, that love in the heart is oil in the vessel, and that truth in the understanding is light in the lamp. Father. That is what I mean, and also that truth or faith will not long continue to shine in our understandings if we neglect to acquire love in our wills or hearts. Mother. Is there not described in one of the prophets a very striking vision concerning the olive-tree and its oil? James. I was just thinking of that. It is in the fourth chapter of Zechariah. Father.
