Excerpt: ... to the Queen at Woodstock, on presenting her with a copy of the Bible: "Hie liber nostra: Universitatis continet, septem sigillis communitus..... Sentential quae adscribuntur symbola sunt Academic; una In principio erat Verbum, et Vcrbutn erat apud Deum; altera Dominus illuminatio mea et salus mea, quetn timebo? tertia Bonitas regnabit, Veritas liberabit, sicuti in libris Oxonian in vico Sancti Johannis quondam impressis vidimus" (Nichols's Progresses of Queen Elizabeth, second edition, vol. i. p. 598). The books to which Humphrey refers are those printed by John Scotar in 1517-8,' &c. One of these books bears the following imprint: 'Explicit Scriptum planissimi doctoris Walteri Bmtei super libros posteriorum. Impressum in academia Oxonie anno dominice incarnationis Mcccccxvii. Die vero decembris quarto ad laudem dei et profectum studentium.' Beneath this is a large square woodcut, not heraldically engraved--two angels supporting a shield surmounted by a cap of dignity. On the shield is an open book, with seven seals or clasps between three crowns. On the leaves of the book appear the words: 'Veritas Liberabit Bonitas regnabit.' Underneath the woodcut is the verse: 'Fata regunt finem: spero discepta secundent.' The motto here given is the last of the three mentioned by Humphrey, who has placed them in what appears to be chronological order. It may be that some positive information will be forthcoming on this point; but it is altogether doubtful whether the arms of the University were ever granted to it, and it is much more probable that they were assumed. They are indeed emblazoned in a manuscript of the fourteenth century, but with no inscription on the book; and it is not unreasonable to suppose that the motto varied with the taste of the Vice-C...
