Garin le Loherain 4233-428l. This custom of giving away fiefs to their favorites was very common among the Capetian kings and caused them endless trouble. On page 64 of "Li Romans de Garin le Loherain" we read: "Un riche don l'emperes li fist; Tote Gascoigni li dona a tenir." As all the fiefs had been divided up long ago, this new partition could not be made without robbing some one of his rightful inheritance. This is the accusation brought a-gainst Pepin in the quotation.just cited. The rebellion of Garin is to be expected and in fact we sympathize with him. The bold statement of his is that of a man who feels himself to be ill treated by an unjust king; and that the king is unjust seems to me to be emphasized throughout. The keen and cutting remark of the duke Aubery puts in strong and unmistakable language the weakness of the king in enforcing his desire. Also it seems to me to be a tacit admitting of the unjust position of Pepin. But this is not the only place where the king is defied and his pow-erlessness spoken of.-"'Sainte ...
