From the northeast corner of Mississippi, where the land is slightly rugged, the surface gradually slopes, with many undulations, west to the Mississippi river and south to the Gulf of Mexico. The broad, low ridge thus formed extends nearly north and south through the State, and divides the waters which flow into the Mississippi from the affluents of the Tombigbee.
