The examiner will mark not less than ten, and those marked must be answered correctly. The writing should be clear, and the spelling must not be disregarded:--43. State below, in writing, what you know of (1) great circle sailing; (2) windward great circle sailing; (3) composite great circle sailing, their advantages and disadvantages, if any. 44. Show approximately on a terrestrial globe the great circle track, and the distance between lat. 1058'S., long. 142 6'E., and lat. 56 26'S., long. 68 4b' W., also the latitude and longitude of vertex, and the longitude from vertex, and explain briefly how the great circle track can then be laid down on a Mcrcator's chart. 45. Required the first course and distance on the arc of a great circle from A to B:--Also the lat. and long. of the vertex, and the lat. at which the track of the great circle intersects the meridians passing through the sixtieth degree of longitude, and every 5, or 10, of longitude in succession until arriving at destination B; lay the track down on the chart and explain briefly how the course and distance from one point to another on this track is then found. (This problem, at the option of the examiner, to be solved either by calculation, or by any tables, graphic method, or great circle chart, known to or preferred by the candidate, but will usually be set so as to be optional to the candidate.) 50.
