They labour and suffer, they live and die,--" praying in the Holy Ghost." Then, these persons "keep themselves in the love of God;" they are believers of a loving, devoted, tender spirit, especially towards God. They are sincere, deep, genuine, undeviating lovers of God. They love His character, His holiness, His law, His precepts, His ordinances, His people, His holy day. They keep themselves in that love; keep up that love by meditation, prayer, communion of saints, holy vigilance, genuine worship; they cherish this love and walk conformably to it. They know that many things in the world tend to quench it; their foolish and corrupt hearts would fain stray after other objects; but they are watchful against these snares. "Keeping themselves in the love of God." That is their grand aim and effort. But, mark one more feature,--they are "looking for the mercy of our Lord Jesus Christ unto eternal life." They feel constantly their need of mercy; after all that they have done, suffered, felt, they throw themselves prostrate before the throne of their gracious God, and implore Him to be merciful to them. They receive every gift as a mercy, their entire path is strewn with mercies; goodness and mercy follow them all their lives. And as to the future, what they look for is, still more mercy. They have no expectation of ever rising above this need so long as they carry a body of sin and death. They lie low as humble petitioners for sovereign mercy, and this all the way through, until grace shall end in glory, and conflicts issue in the conqueror's crown. Do you belong to this class...
