Michael Palin has traveled around the world, exploring countless countries for the BBC. Now, Palin treks Brazil for the first time for a new BBC series, which went on the air in October 2012, and discovers the incredible diversity of this nation, one of four new global superpowers. From the Venezuelan border and the forests of the Lost World to the headwaters of the Xingu, Palin encounters a diverse group of people, including the indigenous hunter-gatherers of the interior, the descendants of African slaves with their vibrant culture of rituals, festivals, and music, a large community of German descent who celebrate their patrimony at the biggest beer festival outside Munich, and the wealthy guachas of the Pantanal. His journey ends at the border with Uruguay and the spectacular Iguacu Falls. A potent mix of races, religions, and cultures, of unexplored wildernesses and bustling modern cities, Brazil comes to life through Palin's eyes, and readers looking for an escape will be unable to resist this beautiful and informative look at one of the most interesting and dynamic countries in the world.

From the beaches of Rio de Janeiro to the bustling metropolis of São Paulo, Michael Palin explores the diverse country of Brazil in this new book featuring gorgeous color photos throughout

About the Author:
MICHAEL PALIN established his reputation with Monty Python's Flying Circus and Ripping Yarns. A self-confessed dromomaniac (travel addict), he has written books to accompany seven very successful travel series, including Himalaya, and hosted many travel television shows. He lives in London, England.
From Booklist:
Aside from its stunning beauty and renowned racial diversity, Brazil is gaining world status as a member of BRIC, the emerging force in world geopolitics and economics. Palin offers a daily diary of his trips there, 74 in all, starting in the rain forest of northwest Brazil, reachable only by plane for a two-day visit with the Yanomami. He goes on to an ecolodge in the Amazon on the Rio Negro, a fish market in Belem, capoeira dances in Salvador, gold mines in Ouro Preto, the Academy of Coffee in Belo Horizonte, the unabashed nearly-nude sunbathing on Copacabana Beach, the surf craze in the favelas of Rio de Janeiro, the set of a telenovela in Barra da Tijuca, and the fashion world of São Paulo. The photographs are beautiful, but just as captivating are Palin’s conversations with Brazilians, from the Beyoncé of the Amazon to a bookmaker in Rio, among others, discussing sports, ecology, commerce, religion, music, food, culture, and the future of Brazil, host of the 2014 World Cup and 2016 Olympics, as its world status rises. --Vanessa Bush
