9781250065032: The Capitalist: A Thriller (A Louis Morgon Thriller)

The villains who abuse our monetary system get what’s coming to them in this ingenious fifth novel in the critically acclaimed Louis Morgon series, written by cartoonist, painter, and novelist Peter Steiner.

St. John Larrimer is a Wall Street investment banker, a pure capitalist by his own definition. Thanks to the Larrimer Fund’s spectacular returns, everyone wants a piece of the action. The only problem is that the whole operation is phony. And with the collapse of the markets and the demise of some of the biggest investment banks, Larrimer’s scam is revealed, and he has to skedaddle to his luxurious Caribbean retreat.

Unfortunately for Larrimer, though, Louis Morgon, an old, long ago defrocked CIA operative now living in France, is one of our bad guy’s victims. For Louis Morgon injustice is an itch that has to be scratched. And he hatches a clever scheme of his own to bring Larrimer down.

Using some forged paintings as bait and with the invaluable assistance of an Algerian computer wiz, a Newark hair stylist, a fake-English art buyer, Larrimer’s former secretary, and a cat named Arthur, Louis Morgan tries to reel in a master crook.

Compelling and complex, The Capitalist is a thriller that will appeal to fans of John le Carre and Graham Greene.

About the Author:

PETER STEINER's most famous cartoon in The New Yorker is the now iconic "On the Internet, No One Knows You're a Dog." He lives in Connecticut and a small town in France. He is also the author of Le Crime, The Terrorist, L'Assassin, and The Resistance.

Review:

"The greatest strength of The Capitalist lies in the ingenuity of its construction...In turn, The Capitalist also does a splendid job of tracing the trickle-down effects of Larrimer’s reckless manipulation of 'financial instruments'; this time, it’s a chapter-by-chapter trail that reaches from the trading rooms of Wall Street to the safety-deposit boxes of secretaries to the mean streets of Moscow." --Washington Post

“A good gulp of great fiction.” ―WAMC, Albany, NY

“Strong suspense plot that will keep you racing through the book...Steiner has written a clear-eyed book that is unsparing in its criticism of our intelligence system...I can't wait to go back and read the other two books.” ―Joe Meyers, The Connecticut Post

“Steiner's brisk, sure-footed third spy thriller to feature 71-year-old ex-CIA agent Louis Morgan (after Le Crime and L'Assassin ) shows it's hard to outmaneuver an old dog. ...Wickedly tight prose propels a plot that shows not one shred of fictional obesity.” ―Publishers Weekly

“Best known for his subtle cartoons in The New Yorker Magazine, Peter Steiner has now done an unexpected, but expert backflip into the world of international intrigue.” ―Jack Ziegler, author of The Essential Jack Ziegler

“A terrific, engrossing novel about love, friendship, betrayal, and trust.” ―Roz Chast, illustrator of One Bite Won't Kill You
