About the Author
Biographie Marguerite Donquichote naît à Sancoins, dans le Cher, le 7 juillet 1863. À l’âge de trois ans, elle perd sa mère, et son père abandonne ses filles. Marguerite et Madeleine (l’aînée), d’abord confiées à une tante, passent neuf années à l’orphelinat de l’Hôpital général de Bourges. De 1877 à 1881, Marguerite est placée, en tant que bergère d’agneaux et servante de ferme, en Sologne à Sainte-Montaine, près d'Aubigny-sur-Nère. Les deux dernières années de cette période sont marquées par la rencontre d’Henri Dejoulx, avec qui la jeune fille vit un amour payé de retour, mais auquel la famille d’Henri, par peur d’une mésalliance, met un terme. L’orpheline s'établit alors à Paris, où elle vit des années noires en exerçant le métier de couturière. Le chômage la contraint de faire d’autres travaux pénibles, à la Cartoucherie de Vincennes et dans la buanderie de l’Hôpital Laennec. Pendant ces années de misère, en 1883, elle a un enfant qui ne survit pas, et dont l'accouchement pénible lui vaut une stérilité définitive.
