Founded in Paris in 1953, The Olympia Press published erotic novels by some of this century’s greatest writers – Vladimir Nabokov, Jean Genet, Henry Miller, William Burroughs and J.P. Donleavy. This book provides a provocative overview of Olympia’s impressive offerings, including excerpts from Burroughs’s Naked Lunch and the cult favorite Candy by Terry Southern, as well as selections from erotic classics like Story of O, Fanny Hill, the Marquis de Sade’s Justine and many others. Each selection is accompanied by wonderful illustrations and fascinating reminiscences by Maurice Girodias, Olympia’s founder and guiding light, who suffered almost perpetual harassment from French authorities for publishing his “d.b.’s” (dirty books).
