Taking a revolutionary approach to a fascinating topic, this fully updated second edition of VIBRATIONS OF MECHANICAL SYSTEMS introduces vibration concepts through motivating design problems. The second edition is enhanced by a pedagogically sound two-color design and is packed with new and updated computer tools, simulations, figures, and practical examples that enhance understanding of vibration theory, its mathematics, and its relevance to engineering. Senior undergraduate students, beginning graduate students, and practicing engineers will gain from the strong background in the theory and practice of vibrational analysis and design they need for success in a career in mechanical, aerospace, naval, biomedical, or structural engineering.

About the Author:
Dr. C. Nataraj, Professor and Chairman of the Department of Mechanical Engineering at Villanova University, has been teaching vibration to undergraduate and graduate students for over two decades. He has performed research on several aspects of vibration analysis and nonlinear dynamics and has published over 100 technical papers. Dr. Nataraj also is an active consultant to the industry and is the Scientific Advisor to Unequal Corporation. He serves on several international committees, including ASME's Technical Committee on Vibration & Sound, the IFToMM Committee, and the Committee for Science and the Arts at the Franklin Institute. He is Chairman of the Board of Directors of Turbo Research Foundation. Dr. Nataraj is the North American Editor for the journal Advances in Vibration Engineering. His research has been funded by the National Science Foundation, the Office of Naval Research, the National Institute of Health, and several companies.
Review:
"This is a very timely and welcome approach to the teaching of mechanical vibrations. In this book author uses perfect combination of theory, background, application and computer programming to teach concepts and create understanding via carefully guided activities. The use of Matlab programming in solving applied problems is certainly useful. In addition, careful mention of the assumptions and limitations of the model is well done.... The writing style, readability and clarity of presentation in this manuscript is a very welcome improvement as compared to the current text.... The example problems are of high quality, well-crafted and clearly presented to highlight the basic approach as well as the intricacies of the topics presented."

"The role of MATLAB is remarkably emphasized throughout the entire book compared to previous textbooks in the same area.... The presentation of the book, with its textual parts, figures and notes, is clear, precise, rich in information and attractive. The writing of the book can be easily followed by students who are not native English speakers.... However, unlike previous ones this book is meticulously designed to be both factually accurate and enjoyably lucid at the same time.... The exercises and examples are generally of excellent quality in terms of relevance, depth and enlightenment.... This book is perfect for innovative teaching of modern theory of vibration for its wonderfully composed integration of mathematics, physics, numerical approaches and problem-oriented learning. The style of writing throughout the book is light-toned, amusing and inspiring. It is also excellent in being appealing to both of beginners and those who desire more challenge."

"The text is written in a light hearted style that would be attractive to students. The think boxes are thought provoking for beginners and practitioners. The approach to the theory taken by the authors is direct and shows original contribution by the author. This approach is appealing to me as an instructor.... The writing style is clear and understandable. The material is rigorous yet presented in a manner that will encourage students delve into the theory.... The strongest features are the author's accessible writing style and thought provoking comments that cause you to pause and wonder about the material."
