9781330293737: Economic History of England (Classic Reprint)

Excerpt from Economic History of England

This book is an attempt to give, within reasonable space, an elementary account of the economic development of England down to the present day.

The need for such a book is admitted on all sides. Textbooks on Economic History in this country have hitherto treated mainly of mediæval times, though the information we can obtain of such times is scanty and untrustworthy, and the knowledge is of little direct value in connection with problems of the present day.

The result has been that a connected and coherent account of England's material progress, taken as a single whole, has been difficult of accomplishment. Text-books in many cases are disjointed, and facts are recorded without any attempt at explanation.

Even the best text-books have paid little attention to recent development in the last 150 years, while it is just this period which has had most effect on the England of to-day. Much excellent work has been done, but it has never been gathered up into one general scheme. Here, at least, we have much to learn from German and French scholars.

An attempt has been made in this book to fill the gap, as far as the limits of space allow, and bearing in mind the elementary nature of the treatise.
