Excerpt from Drawing and Engraving: A Brief Exposition of Technical Principles
There was very little choice about the method Of treatment, as the subjects were vast and the space rigorously limited. 1 could only say what was most important and say even that laconically. The style of the papers had to be simply didactic. As a rule, I am unwilling to assume an authoritative tone, but may have as much right to it as anybody else, after giving the best part of forty years to the study of these or cognate subjects.

Paperback. Condition: New. Print on Demand. This book explores the artistic development of drawing and engraving, with a particular focus on the transition from classical to mediaeval, and finally Renaissance styles. The author traces the evolution of drawing as it transformed from a simple representation of form through line, to a sophisticated art form that encompasses perspective, chiaroscuro, and the study of human anatomy. It examines how the Renaissance brought both scientific and idealistic elements into drawing and engraving, leading to the development of techniques that are still used today. Beyond its historical account, this book delves into the theoretical underpinnings of drawing and engraving, discussing the relationship between drawing and writing, the nature of picturesque drawing, and the importance of technical mastery in artistic expression. This book will appeal to artists, art historians, and anyone interested in the fascinating evolution of these art forms.
