This book compares the ways in which the Roman philosophers Lucretius and Cicero addressed the challenge of translating the highly technical Greek philosophical ideas of Epicureanism into the Latin language. Despite his fervent patriotism, Cicero, whose philosophical interests were largely ethical, was happy to employ pre-existing Latin terms or borrow Greek ones to convey Epicurean concepts. In marked contrast, Lucretius, whose concerns were primarily physical and atomic, felt compelled to forge a new Latin philosophical vocabulary to translate the technical details of the Epicurean world-view. His resolution, and the remarkable consistency with which he carried it out, are striking, especially in light of the patrii sermonis egestas, or "poverty of the native tongue", of which he complained. Through an analysis of hundreds of Latin terms appearing in Lucretius's philosophical epic, De Rerum Natura, and in Cicero's philosophical works, the author shows that Lucretius succeeded admirably in creating a philosophical terminology for the Latin language.
