Excerpt from Satanstoe Or the Littlepage Manuscripts A Tale of the Colony Every chronicle of manners has a certain value When customs are connected with principles in their origin development or end such records have a double importance and it is because we think we see such a connection between the facts and incidents of the Littlepage Manuscripts and certain important theories of our own time that we give the former to the world It is perhaps a fault of your professed historian to refer too much to philosophical agencies and too little to those that are humbler The foundations of great events are often remotely laid in very capricious and uncalculated passions motives or impulses Chance has usually as much to do with the fortunes of states as with those of individuals or if there be calculations connected with them at all they are the calculations of a power superior to any that exists in man We had been led to lay these Manuscripts before the world partly by considerations of the above nature and partly on account of the manner in which the two works we have named Satanstoe and the Chainbearer relate directly to the great New York question of the day anti rentism which question will be found to be pretty fully laid bare in the third and last book of the series About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books Find more at www forgottenbooks com This book is a reproduction of an important historical work Forgotten Books uses state of the art technology to digitally reconstruct the work preserving the original format whilst repairing imperfections present in the aged copy In rare cases an imperfection in the original such as a blemish or missing page may be replicated in our edition We do however repair the vast majority of imperfections successfully any imperfections that remain are intentionally left to preserve the state of such historical works

About the Author:

James Fenimore Cooper (1789-1851) was a famed nineteenth century American author known for his work in fiction particularly sea stories and historical novels and politics. He enrolled in Yale University, never earned a degree but later joined the United States Navy. Some of his most famous works include Last of the Mohicans, A Letter to my Countymen, and Ned Myers' or A Life before the Mast.

Review:

Satanstoe (1845) is perhaps Cooper s best novel after the Leatherstocking Tales. The pastoral picture it gives of colonial life, particularly among the Dutch settlers at Albany, reminds one of The Pioneers. Marius Bewley, The Eccentric Design: Form in the Classic American Novel
Much of the time in this charming book, Satanstoe, which George Sand thought one of his best, Cooper is on holiday from his more strenuous ideas. Taking advantage of this point of view as a pre-Revolutionary New Yorker, he enjoys living in the cozy province that speaks so warmly of England as home and trusts the mother country unhesitatingly, certain of her superior wisdom and ability. James Grossman, James Fenimore Cooper"

Excerpt from Satanstoe; Or the Littlepage Manuscripts: A Tale of the Colony It is perhaps a fault of your professed historian, to refer too much to philosophical agencies, and too little to those that are humbler. The foundations of great events are often remotely laid in very capricious and uncalculated pas sions, motives, or impulses. Chance has usually as much to do with the fortunes of states, as with those of individ nals; or, if there be calculations connected with them at all, they are the calculations of a power superior to any that exists in man.
