The enemy having become greatly encouraged with their numerous Victories, after their victory at Chancellorsville decided to no longer confine themselves south of Mason and Dixon's Line, but to extend the war into the North. Harrisburg, the Capital of the great Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, was looked upon by the Con federate authorities during the dark days of the rebellion as sec ond in importance to them as the Capital of our Nation. They believed that if General Lee could succeed m penetrating into Pennsylvania, and capturing Harrisburg, he would have but little.
