Excerpt from Brave Little Holland, and What She Taught Us
MY interest in Holland extends back to boy hood's days in Philadelphia, the city founded by the son of a Dutch mother, and partly settled by the learned and industrious N etherlanders who accompanied William Penn to America. Educa tion at Rutgers College - begun and nourished by men of Dutch name and descent, who kept alive the memories of their ancestors was fol lowed by a Visit to Holland in 1869. Then came four years of life among the Japanese, whose only teachers of science and European civiliza~ tion for over two hundred years had been Dutcb' men. Nine years' service as pastor of the First Reformed Dutch Church in Schenectady, N. Y., enabled me to become acquainted with the con tents both of the deacon's chest at home and the rich collection of documents illustrating Dutch American history in the State Library and City Hall in Albany. During a residence of seven years in Boston, I made two literary journeys through Nederland and its libraries. I learned.

Paperback. Condition: New. Print on Demand. This book delves into the rich and often overlooked history of the Netherlands, a country whose influence on the world has been far greater than its size might suggest. The author takes us on a journey through time, starting with the earliest inhabitants of the land, the Celts and the Germanic tribes, and tracing their development under the Roman Empire. We learn how these ancient people shaped the landscape of the Netherlands, mastering the art of dyke building and reclamation of land from the sea. The narrative then shifts to the turbulent Middle Ages, marked by the arrival of the Saxons and Frisians, who would later play a pivotal role in the formation of England. The author explores the close cultural ties between the Dutch and the English, showing how the Dutch language, traditions, and ideas migrated across the North Sea, shaping the course of British history. The book highlights the Dutch struggle for independence against Spanish rule, drawing parallels to the American Revolution. The author explores the Dutch model of a federal republic, with its system of sovereign states and a written constitution, which would serve as an inspiration for the founding fathers of the United States. Ultimately, this book offers a compelling exploration of the Netherlands' unique cultural heritage, its resilient spirit, and its enduring contributions to the global landscape of freedom and democracy.
