Thefe edié'ts, which were by the Jews looked upon as a kind of perfecution, failed not, as ufual, to produce a more than ordinary difcontent; which by degrees ripened into revolts, as foon as a proper opportunity offered. The firlt of them was vraifed accordingly by one Julian, who fet up for the Mefliah, and drew after shim many of the Jews of Paleftine, who were in great hopcs of him, from the title of Conqueror which he took, and the great ap pearance he made and who having armed all his follow ers, led them againf'c the Chriftians. Thefe, being fear Iefs of any hof'tilities from the oppreiled Jews at that time, were flaughtered by them in great numbers, till at length the emperor fent his forces againft, and fupprelled them 5 though they fought rather like wild defperadoes than like regular troops.
