His Essay does not in any way claim to be a Treatise on the subject. Lack of leisure has compelled me to omit many important topics and to deal all too briefly With others. My debt to previous writers - to Bensa, Huvelin, Schaube, Pollock and Maitland, and above all to Goldschmidt - is evident on every page; as far as time and opportunities allowed I have gone to the original authorities. While the Essay was in the Press, I learnt that there were numerous fair rolls.

Book Description:

This 1904 volume discusses the early history of the Law Merchant, an international body of rules and principles created by medieval western merchants, distinct from the common law of the areas in which it operated. Mitchell argues that the system was based upon a pragmatic attitude to solving disputes.

About the Author:

W. R. Bill Mitchell is an authority on the Lake District. He has been recording its way of life for sixty years, principally through his work for Cumbria, a magazine which he edited for over thirty years. Bill has written over two-hundred books and countless articles through his career. These have covered areas such as Yorkshire, Scotland and the Settle-Carlisle Railway as well as the Lake District. In 1996 he was awarded an MBE for his services to journalism and, in the same year, an honorary degree of Doctor of Letters by the University of Bradford.
