Excerpt from The Public and the Doctor

The practicing physician cannot help wondering how little accurate and correct information the general public possesses as to medical affairs. Neither the nature of diseases nor the aims of treatment are as well understood as so important a feature of human life demands. As a natural consequence the position and work of the physician is greatly encumbered, and a sound relationship between the public and him endangered, to the detriment and annoyance of both. The only way to remedy this unfortunate condition is to secure better information for the masses. This is partially done by public schools and current literature. That it is not sufficient is shown by the increase of quackery.

To assist in the good work is the object of this booklet. It is written by a regular physician and is offered to such persons as are amenable to reason.
