Excerpt from Jefferson Davis, and His Complicity in the Assassination of Abraham Lincoln, President of the United States: And Where the Traitor Shall Be Tried for Treason

Jefferson Davis commenced his rebel career by two crimes - perjury as a Senator and former member of the Cabinet of President Pierce, and treason against the United States. He had been a cadet, and received his education at the expense of the government. A man guilty of two such heinous crimes can hardly be supposed not to have encouraged these preliminary attempts at the assassination cf the chief, whom he branded as a usurper and a cruel and remorseless tyrant.
