The Atrocities perpetrated by the Indian Tribes of Western New York, upon the Frontiers of New York and Pennsylvania, and especially the Massacres of Cherry Valley and Wyoming, in 1778, led to a Determination upon an Invasion of the Indian Country, and the utter Devastation and Ruin of their Villages and Improvements, with the View of Disabling them from further Hostilities, and of compelling them to sue for Peace, by forcing them to experience in its full Severity, the Miseries of War.

Sullivan, marched with three Brigades from Eaf ton to Wyoming, and from thence, after a long and mof t harra ing Delay, attributed by him to the Diihonefiy of Contractors and other Caufes, he marched on the laft Day of July, with very inadequate Supplies, and thefe of inferior Quality. And on the 11th of Auguft, reached Tioga Point. A Detachment was fent forward to Chemung, twelve Miles diftant, the next Day, who difperfed a Body of Indians, with the Lofs of feven of their Number, burned a Village and re turned to the Army. In a Bend of the River, he erected a defenfive Work called Fort Sullivan, and awaited Gen. Clinton, who arrived on the 22d of that Month. Gen. James Clinton, was at the Time when the Expedition was planned, in Command of the Northern Department, and.fiationed at Albany. The Brigade under his Command, in the Service affigned him in this Expedition, was made up of Detachments of the Third, Fourth, and Fifth New York, Fourth Pennfylvania, and Sixth Maf fachufetts Continental Battalions, with a Company of Artillery and of Ri emen, confifting in all of about fifteen hundred Men.
