Excerpt from Manuel De Moraes: A Chronicle of the Seventeenth Century

The "Biographia Luzitana" of the Abbade Diogo Barbosa supplies the following short notice of the life of Manuel de Moraes: -

He was born in Sao Paulo (Brazil) at the end of the sixteenth or at the beginning of the seventeenth century; he wrote a History of America, which is now wholly lost, and a Memoir advocating the acclamation of Dom Joao IV., published (1641) at Leyden with the title of "Prognostico y Respuesta a una pergunta de un Caballero muy ilustre sobre las cosas de Portugal" ("Forecast and Reply to the Question of an Illustrious Personage upon the Affairs of Portugal"). He was condemned by the Tribunal of the Holy Office, and he was "relaxed" in effigy at the Act of Faith of April 6, 1643, his crimes being apostasy from the Catholic creed and intermarriage with a schismatic. Finally, he died at Lisbon, a natural death, according to some, whilst others, not less informed, declare that he lost his life by violence.
