Excerpt from Die Münz-und Geldpolitik der Stadt Basel im Mittelalter
Unter Mitbenutzung von Materialien die in früheren Jahren Herr Staatsrat Prof. Dr. Von Schönberg in Tübingen und Herr Dr. August Bernard/z, Direktor der Landesbibliothek in Bern, gesam melt haben, arbeite ich seit mehreren Jahren an einer Darstellung des Basler Stadthaushalts im ausgehenden Mittelal ter. Dieses Werk, dessen erster Band druckfertig vorliegt, soll demnächst mit Unterstützung der Antiquarischen und Historischen Gesellschaft in Basel unter dem Titel; quellen und Studien zur Basler Finanzgeschichte im Mittelalter zu erscheinen beginnen. Das Basler Staatsarchiv enthält neben ungewöhnlich vollzähligen Rech nungsbüchern eine Fülle von Finanzakten, die einen ziemlich klaren Einblick in den öffentlichen Haushalt Basels gestatten und vor allem das komplizierte, früh ausgebildete Steuerwesen vortrefflich beleuchten. Zu bedauern ist nur, dass dieser wertvolle Schatä erst mit dem Jahre 1362 einsetzt, weil der dem Erdbeben von 1356 folgende Brand die alteren Archivalien vernichtet hat. An derseits sind in Deutschland gerade die letzten 150 Jahre des ausgehenden Mittelalters in politischer, wirtschaftlicher und so zialerbeziehung von so hervorragender Bedeutung für die fol gende Entwicklung gewesen, dass eingehende finanzpolitische Untersuchungen über ein zwar kleines aber trotzdem nicht nu wichtiges politisches Gemeinwesen auch das allgemeine Interesse in Anspruch nehmen dürfen.
