Synopsis

This book is a treatise on the British Colonies in North America, with particular focus on the legal claims and reasoning used by the Patriots in support of their rebellion and the counter-arguments offered in defense of British rule. The book is of particular interest because it was written before the American Revolution concluded, offering a contemporary perspective on the foundational ideas that would shape the relationship between Britain and its former colonies. The author, who was a British Loyalist, writes in clear vigorous prose, presenting both sides of the argument, and exposing the legal contradictions embedded in the Patriot position. He sees the conflict as a battle between immutable laws of nature and historical precedent, and argues that the Patriots effectively sought to establish a new form of government for which there was no foundation in law.
