Excerpt from The Buckling of a Thick Circular Plate Using a Non-Linear Theory
The Object of this paper is to study the stability Of equilibrium of an isotropic circular cylinder when compressed along its curved lateral surface. The compression on the curved part of the boundary is assumed to be such that the generators of the cylinder remain Vertical straight lines, but so that no shear stress is developed: it is as though the cylinder were compressed by shrinking a very stiff greased ring down on it. The plane faces are assumed to be free of stress. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Paperback. Condition: New. Print on Demand. This book delves into the intricacies of the three-dimensional theory of elasticity, providing an in-depth analysis of the stability of circular cylinders under compression. The author masterfully employs Lagrange coordinates and a matrix notation to establish a rigorous framework for understanding the behavior of these structures. Through a series of thought-provoking derivations, the author explores the concepts of strain energy, equilibrium equations, and boundary conditions, laying the groundwork for the exploration of buckling phenomena. The book's significance lies in its ability to illuminate the complex interactions that determine the stability of cylindrical structures, offering valuable insights for engineers and researchers working in the field of structural mechanics.
