From the Preface to the Grammar of which this forms the First Part.
To meet a twofold need, first, of an easy and rapid intro duction to reading, secondly, of a critical exposition of both grammar and syntax, the book is divided into two parts, each forming an independent whole by itself.
The First Part is intended to enable the learner to begin reading with profit at the earliest practicable moment, or in from three to six weeks. It contains simply an elementary outline of the essentials of French pronunciation and accidence (some indispensable syntactical directions included), as well as accompanying exercises. The rules are purposely few, and as simple as has seemed compatible with accuracy of state ment. Details and exceptions are left to the Second Part, where each of the subjects contained here, as well as others, receives fuller and independent treatment.
Though entirely elementary, this First Part is thought to contain sufficient material for its purpose. It may even be all that is needed where only a minimum of time can be given to grammar, or where scholars are too young to undertake a more earnest study of details.
