This account of the Five Australian Divisions does not pretend to be history. There are doubtless details missing, details incorrect inevitable in such an account, written mostly from current notes made in the field.
Much of the earlier part of the story has appeared in disjointed form in letters from the front to the Australian press. The matter of those letters, however, has been edited and expanded to make the story coherent, and the mention Of particular Battalions and Brigades is now possible.
