Excerpt from Romance of the Charter Oak: A Picture of Colonial Times
At the hour when our story opens, the tempest had come to an end. And in the west a strip of blue sky, which was growing every moment larger and larger, showed that the weather would be clear and bitterly cold. The sun was not far from the horizon, and Lydia, seated by one of the windows, was watching a flock of snow-birds hopping about out side, picking up a handful of crumbs she had thrown them. Presently a gust of wind struck the house, making it tremble so, that she half believed it was going to rise and blowr away.

The daughter of Colonel Goffe, one of King Charles I's executioners, Lydia lives with her father and their loyal housemaid deep in the brutal New England wilderness to avoid capture and execution by King Charles II. The story takes place amidst growing tensions between the American colonists and the British monarchy, as the infamous Governor Andros attempts to crush the budding independence of the New England colonies. A combination of historical fiction and romance, this book explores themes of freedom, rebellion, and the struggle for religious and political expression in early America. Through Lydia's eyes, the reader is given a glimpse into the lives of both the oppressed and oppressors, shedding light on one of the most turbulent periods in American history.
