Excerpt from Constitutional History of South Carolina From 1725 to 1775
My object has been to trace the constitutional development of the people of South Carolina. If there is a wearisome multiplication of details it is due to going too far in my desire to make the history perfectly intel ligible and likewise realistic. This is made the more necessary by the meagre treatment given by the general histories to South Carolina, and by the many egregious blunders in matters of fact in many of them.

This book delves into the political landscape of South Carolina during the period between 1725 and 1775, a time when the colony was transitioning from a proprietary to a royal government and ultimately towards independence. The author meticulously analyzes the power dynamics between the colony's governing bodies, particularly the Commons House of Assembly and the King's Council, highlighting the struggle for self-governance and the tensions stemming from the King's influence. The book also provides insights into the burgeoning backcountry population and the growing discontent arising from inadequate representation and access to justice. This discontent, manifested by the Regulator movement, contributed to the escalating demand for change that ultimately led to the American Revolution. The book's in-depth examination of the colony's constitutional development sheds light on the complex factors leading to the birth of a new nation.
