This book examines the 1720s Wood's halfpence controversy. Halfpenny and farthing coins were scarce in Ireland. William Wood was granted a patent by the English crown in 1722 to produce copper coins for Ireland. However, the Irish people believed the coins, produced from a mixture of copper and brass, were significantly less valuable than the amount for which they were intended to pass. Led by the author, the Irish people resisted attempts by the English Crown to force acceptance of this currency and ultimately succeeded in having the patent withdrawn in 1725. This publication shows how public agitation can influence political outcomes.
