From Kirkus Reviews:

This handsome, oversized browsing book devotes two pages to each of 12 habitats, including swamps, deserts, tropical grasslands, the sea, and the Arctic and Antarctic. For each environment, seven or more animals are illustrated, together with exceedingly brief information. A typical caption: ``The white rhinoceros is one of the rarest African mammals. It usually grazes alone.'' Some of the statements are not supported in other sources; for example, describing lions, Wood states that ``At night the females usually hunt for food.'' The illustrations give few clues to the sizes of different animals; scientific names are not given. A world map indicates the location of each type of habitat. American readers may be surprised to note that the Oregon and California coast is a desert, and that there are no mountains in the eastern US. Still, young children will enjoy the attractive illustrations; they will have to look elsewhere for information of any depth. (Nonfiction. 4-8) -- Copyright ©1992, Kirkus Associates, LP. From School Library Journal:

Grade 3-5-- Lavishly illustrated in full color, the pages of this oversized volume offer depictions of many animals in their natural habitats. The random choices include inhabitants of the arctic, tundra, jungles, deserts, and woodlands. Although some of the information is interesting, the haphazard approach makes the work more pleasurable for browsing than for reports. The facts given generally concentrate on the hunting aspects of the animals, e.g., wolves are shown killing caribou and polar bears are seen eating seals. The large color-coded map, which also serves as an introduction to the geographical format, is not accurate and may lead to some misconceptions. Vast areas of North America, Europe, and the Soviet Union don't fit into any of the designations and are left unidentified. Difficult terms are not defined. The detailed, naturalistic drawings are appealing, but many other sources offer more and better information. --Eva Elisabeth Von Ancken, Trinity Pawling School, NY
