Synopsis
La musica elettronica ci affascina così tanto perché promette il futuro: è la musica di domani, oggi. Questa storia personale e dizionario amoroso di mezzo secolo di musica elettronica - costruito attraverso profili, saggi e interviste - non poteva dunque che chiamarsi Futuromania. Simon Reynolds eleva a titolo l'orgogliosa dipendenza dal nuovo, l'amore per tutto ciò che sembra arrivare alle nostre orecchie come un ambasciatore della forma sonora delle cose che verranno. Ma il lungo percorso che dagli anni Settanta di Moroder, Kraftwerk e Eno porta al synth-pop, alla musica della cultura rave, a Burial e ai tardi anni Dieci della trap e della conceptronica nasconde un'inquietudine, se non proprio un paradosso: la sensazione che in qualche modo siamo andati oltre il futuro, e lo abbiamo lasciato alle spalle. «I Feel Love», «Trans-Europe Express» e le altre profetiche registrazioni del nostro avvenire pop iniziano a sembrarci memorie fantasmatiche di una modernità e di un modernismo ormai finiti. I sogni elettronici sono quindi fatti della promessa e del ricordo del futuro, sono desideri e ossessioni insieme. Futuromania è una guida, informa e soprattutto spinge il lettore alla scoperta del nuovo, accompagnandolo in avventure sonore. Perché, come dice l'autore, «qui dentro c'è tutta una vita di ascolto elettronico».
