Skandelus tells her readers about the well-known politicians she has had sexual relationships with. Her pain is camouflaged through her various male associates who would love to control her but are unable to do so. Through traveling cross-country and living in different cities and states, Skandelus is able to support herself by getting into legal trouble. She does not learn about being mentally ill until she gets arrested for her casino gambling. She also gets escorted off of the island of Jamaica for her political interest. Elaine McNeill is from Fayetteville, North Carolina even though she was born in Cleveland, Ohio. Somewhere between the ages of her being three years old up through five years old, she was taken to her maternal grandmother who had always resided in the South. William and Julia Linear were the couple that had kept Elaine from her birth up through the time she had to leave them. From September 2, 1955 Elaine was destined to go up and down on an emotional roller coaster of her life that would reveal a special form of mental illness called Manic Depression.
