Grades 2-5--An excellent collection of creative activities that will keep youngsters busy outside when the weather is nice. Seven chapters offer suggestions for various games, group events, nature projects, community service, and kid businesses. The activities include staging a balloon Olympics, playing broom ball, creating a spy journal, building a sundial, helping a neighbor, or having a yard sale. Each entry contains step-by-step instructions; a supply list; and symbols noting difficulty, length of time required, optimal number of participants, and ideal suggested terrain. Full-color photographs showing a wide variety of children in action also accompany the entries, and there is an index to similar activities in the book. An easy-to-read key to all symbols and a listing of easily accessible supplies are provided. Safety is stressed throughout, and there is a two-page spread of important "rules of the wild." The fun, engaging text is well written and speaks directly to children. Bold colors, various fonts, whimsical illustrations, and a superb layout add to the appeal in this well-organized title. Gr. 3-6. The activities suggested in this title range from games to crafts to volunteering to small-business ventures. Each activity is described in a few paragraphs, with the supplies needed and difficulty of each activity covered in a set of symbols on the first page. The text is concise and breezy; the layout effective, with plenty of color photographs. A few of the crafts or activities, however, such as making papier-mache or starting a lawn-care business, seem too complicated to be covered in such a simple format. And most kids won't need directions for other activities, such as playing Follow the Leader or using sidewalk chalk. Yet many of the activities are fun and the directions easily digestible. This book will come in handy for those who, as our mothers used to say, need to go outside and get some fresh air. Todd Morning
