With mock-epic flair, the author-illustrator team of I Saw an Ant on the Railroad Track (2006) comically elevates a tiny scenario--an ant crossing a parking lot--with mega silliness and suspense. Observant parking-lot matron and primary-narrator Dorothy Mott fears she is about to witness disaster as a minivan and ant, each unaware of the other, converge on the same spot--minivan to park, ant to eat. Then, at the crucial moment, as the ant is about to get blotted, Mott's heroic doughnut toss lures the ant away, averting calamity. Tongue-in-cheek rhyming stanzas feature playful asides and encourage lively read-alouds. The boldly colored computer-enhanced art offers witty depictions, blending caricatured realistic characters alongside cartoons.
