Reviewed with Jenny Vaughan and Peggy Beauchamp's Christmas Foods.
Gr. 3-7. These titles in the World of Recipes series collect favorite celebratory dishes from around the globe. Both books begin with an extremely simplistic overview of how various countries celebrate holidays, followed by a spread about common ingredients featured in the recipes and cautions to seek adult guidance for more hazardous tasks. The format is easy to read, with a boxed list of ingredients; a short paragraph introducing each dish; straightforward, step-by-step instructions; and a text bar indicating the level of skill and estimated time each recipe requires. Both titles include soup, main dish, and dessert recipes from a wide range of countries and cultures. Not every recipe in Christmas has a clear holiday connection; in the recipe for Italian amaretti, for example, the only mention of the holiday is that the cookies "make a wonderful Christmas present!" Color photos, a glossary of cooking terms, and a page about the food pyramid round out these useful titles, which, with adult help, will serve as handy introductions to global cuisines.
