9781405104012: Blueprints Orthopedics (Blueprints Pockets)

Designed as a quick read for both students on an orthopedics rotation and others who want to know more about the specialty, Blueprints Orthopedics covers the essentials of orthopedics that every student will need to know.

Pocket-sized and practical, this book covers the most common conditions students are likely to encounter. The focus is on the essential content students need to know during a rotation, allowing for a fast, easy read. Blueprints Orthopedics is organized anatomically for quick, easy-to-use reference. Each chapter begins with a concise overview of high-yield surgical and functional anatomy, followed by review of the physical examination, diagnostic evaluation, and treatment of common orthopedic diseases and disorders.

Fifty multiple-choice review questions are included to help students test their understanding of the subject. The book also features valuable appendices on career and residency opportunities, a handy reference list of commonly prescribed medications, a glossary of key words, terms, and tests, and suggested additional readings of current and classic evidence-based references.

Blueprints Orthopedics is perfect for medical students. Physician assistants, nurse practitioners, and related health professionals will also find the book valuable.

About the Author:

About the Author Dr. Grant Cooper is a physical medicine and rehabilitation resident at New York-Presbyterian Hospital, The University Hospital of Columbia and Cornell. He graduated from UMDNJ-Robert Wood Johnson medical school in 2003.

Review:

"Blueprints Orthopedics would be useful initial reading material for a senior medical student. In addition to an orthopedics rotation, students will find it useful for family medicine, emergency medicine, or an urgent care rotation." - 1st year resident, Orthopaedic Surgery, University of California, San Francisco "I think that Blueprints Orthopedics provides a sufficiently comprehensive reference to be the sole book used by a medical student on an orthopedics rotation, and also perhaps those interested in general surgery or another surgical subspecialty. The length makes the book a manageable read, even the weekend before the start of an elective/rotation. I would recommend Blueprints Orthopedics to any student interested in a quick, painless overview of this daunting field." - 3rd year medical student, UMDNJ/New Jersey Medical School "Blueprints Orthopedics seems to cover just the right amount of info needed as a med student." - 1st year resident, Orthopaedic Surgery, Temple University "The Q A section is great. There is a paucity of Q A out there for orthopaedics review for med students. Going into orthopaedics, my friends and I often lamented not having the same kind of review at our fingertips that our friends going into internal medicine or pediatrics had. Also, I think the book's organization is well put together anatomically, allowing for ease in reading and consultation." - 1st year Orthopedics Resident, University Hospitals of Cleveland/Case Western Reserve University "Blueprints Orthopedics provides a good source of basic orthopaedic knowledge in each of the orthopaedic subspecialties that will give a 3rd or 4th year medical student a good foundation for any orthopaedic rotation. Strengths include the explanation of surgical anatomy, helping students prepare for possible pimping questions during OR time; the emphasis on common surgical procedures, helping students become aware of what procedures they are most likely to encounter during a rotation; and the inclusion of risk factors/differential diagnoses, so students may be able to educate patients as to what they should avoid or expect in the course of disease." - 4th year medical student, Albany Medical College "Blueprints Orthopedics is a very good book. It offers a concise presentation of material that can be read quickly and be reread if refreshment is needed. The physical exam sections are very high yield. Few other resources cover this material in a manageable fashion for med students. Really there is no other book available now that covers this information in a concise manner at a reasonable price." - 1st year Orthopedics Resident, Southern Illinois University "The length is a definite advantage of this book. It is short enough to read the weekend before your elective and to give you an overview of what is to come. Most textbooks overestimate the amount of free time that medical students have to spend reading long-winded authors; however, this book does not. The organization of this book is very clear and the language is very accessible. It is anatomically sorted and medical terms/signs are overall well defined. The high yield anatomy sections introducing the chapters provide a helpful anatomical guide without belaboring clinically useless details. These high-quality, well written anatomical reviews are the kind that most students sadly do not routinely receive in medical school, emphasizing only the important details that affect diagnosis and treatment. The cost makes the book very reasonably priced considering the prices of comparable hardcover textbooks." - 3rd year medical student, UMDNJ/New Jersey Medical School
