Book Description:

From Brazil to Germany, New York to Ghana, Dialogues of Dispersal delineates intersections of gender and sexuality within Afro-diasporic communities, between continents, and across national boundaries. The interdisciplinary essays in this volume cover a broad chronological sweep, ranging from eighteenth-century slavery to twentieth-century social movements. Authors in this volume analyze religion, popular culture, identity, maternalism, sartorial practices, and transnational networks. They interrogate color and class issues, highlight dynamics of inclusion and exclusion, and explore politics of narration, performance, and recognition. If the field of African diaspora studies has exploded over the past 20 years, Dialogues of Dispersal is a distinct departure that contains sustained analysis of how gender and sexuality complicate circuits of exchange. In the process, this volume underscores how diasporas are at once overlapping spheres of human experience and constructed sites of connection and engagement.
