About the Author:

Fay Valentine is Director of the Children and YoungPeople’s Directorate in the School of Nursing and MidwiferyStudies, Cardiff University. She has a long history of working withchildren and young people with chronic illness. Her specialistinterests are leadership, adolescence and chronic illness. She isthe Welsh representative on the RCN Children and YoungPeople’s Advisory Panel, a member of the all-Wales SeniorChildren’s Nursing Forum and committee member for the WelshNursing and Midwifery Council.


Lesley Lowes is a Research Fellow/Practitioner at theResearch, Health and Social Care Research Centre, School of Nursingand Midwifery Studies, Cardiff University. She is an experiencedqualitative researcher, whose research interests include childhoodchronic illness (diabetes in particular), theories of loss, grief,adaptation and change, and the involvement of service users inhealth and social care research. She has an extensive clinical andacademic publication portfolio, particularly in the field ofpaediatric diabetes. In addition to her academic work, she has a50% clinical remit as a paediatric diabetes specialist nurse withCardiff and Vale NHS Trust.
