Book Description:

The editors of Art History have brought together a collection of six essays by art historians, anthropologists and commentators on contemporary visual culture on the theme of lsquo;Locationrsquo;. Issues explored included transatlantic exchanges and global connections, the nature of hospitality that arises in acknowledging migration and diaspora, cultural diversity, and the location of producing, writing and curating. The session was open to the wide range of artrsquo;s contested histories that had developed in the recent past. They have now opened that debate to a far wider range of examples and concerns. By focusing more specifically on the word lsquo;locationrsquo;, contributors consider such topics as site-specificity, examinations of the trans-national / trans-cultural, how images / visual forms migrate and the repositioning of ownership.

From the Back Cover:

How important is location in producing, understanding, and curatingart? What happens when art and artists migrate? Thisexciting andprovocative collection brings together seven essays by arthistorians, anthropologists and commentators on contemporary visualculture on the theme of ‘location’.

‘Location’ is considered in many different ways: themigration of art and artists in the past and the present,trans-national and trans-cultural exchanges and internationalexhibitions, the nature of hospitality that arises in acknowledgingdifference, and the significance of location in producing, writingabout and curating art in Europe, North America and Asia. Anattention to place and space in global and local settingshighlights site-specificity as well as global connections, actualand imaginary locations, the places and positions of viewing, andthe location of the artist, in the studio and in the work.
