Lydia Monks is the author and illustrator of Aaaaarrrgghh, Spider! and Eek Mouse! From Booklist:
Judging from the photograph on the dedication page, Babbit is a real-life stuffed bunny. Indeed, this story reads as inspired by a toy’s continual, traumatic misplacement. Babbit narrates a day with his minders, the Big One and the Little One—the latter of whom is “not really very good” at looking after him. Case in point: a lovely picnic is interrupted by a group of meanies (the Witchy One, the Snappy One, etc.) who take Babbit into the woods to eat. It takes both little girls a while—ahem—but eventually they rescue Babbit and off they go, sprinting for home with the meanies right behind, until they all run into the Biggest One of All, who puts the whole lot of them to bed. The wide-eyed characters have the look of simple paper dolls, and their innocent pastels humorously contrast with the dark gray forest. Meanwhile, the stentorian typeface lends Babbit a fussy manner, even when he is exclaiming nonsense like “Boing de de boing boing!” A fun but sensible lesson, ever so lightly given.
