From Booklist:
Gr. 2-5. Long ago, in Baghdad, a poor porter named Sinbad sat down to grumble outside a rich merchant's house. The merchant, named Sinbad the Sailor, invites the porter in and tells him the story of the seven voyages that gained the merchant his wealth. The journeys begin in places known on the map (the book's handsome endpapers provide one) and extend into lands of fantasy. By the end of the merchant's tale, Sinbad the Porter has decided that his own safe life at home is not so bad. Watercolor-and-ink comic-strip artwork (the panels vary in size) illustrates the tale, with each double-page spread handsomely and differently framed, as if to contain all the zip and excitement that's going on in the story. The text, which includes lines located under the illustrations as well as irreverent commentary found in cartoon voice balloons, would be tedious to read aloud, and the size of the print in the balloon dialog is sometimes minuscule. With so much to linger over on each page, however, the book is a good choice for the confident young reader. Extravagance and adventure mark both the story and the pictures in a well-unified way.
