About the Author:

Elizabeth Jeffrey lives near Colchester in Essex, where many of her novels have been set. She is the author of some fifteen novels, including Strangers' Hall, Cassie Jordan, The Buttercup Fields, The Weaver's Daughter, Cast a Long Shadow, Travellers' Inn and, with Severn House, Rookhurst Hall.

Review:

This gentle rags-to-riches story will appeal to all romance fans, what with its dastardly villains, plucky and virtuous heroine, and heartwarming ending. Jeffrey paints an evocative picture of turn-of-the-century England, where the rich and poor lived very different lives and the loss of a woman's virtue was the most shameful tragedy. Twins Sophie and Jemima are their mother Eva's twelfth and thirteenth children. When Eva's husband drowns on the day the girls are born, Eva blames it on Jemima's birth as the thirteenth child. With no husband, Eva has no money, so she sends Sophie to live with an aunt. Jemima is left behind, treated as a virtual slave and frequently made the target of her mother's drunken abuse. Even so, Jemima pursues her ambition to become a teacher with single-minded purpose. She needs money to pay for teacher training, though, so she is forced to work at Baxter's Haberdashery, where she meets the Baxters' son, Richard, who is instantly smitten with Jemima. A quintessential romance, rich in historical ambience and appealing characters. --Booklist, 1st July 2009
