9781408152829: Turtles in Our Wake

Most people at
some point long to escape - from the weather, the commute, the routine. Sailing
off in a forty-foot boat called Voyager comes at a price, however. Indeed, for David and
Sandra Clayton it meant selling their house and possessions with a lifetime's
collection of memories and emotions attached to them. But the result proved
life-enhancing.
With her eye for
detail and vivid descriptions, Sandra carries the reader with her through some
of the Mediterranean's loveliest islands. Charmed by tranquil anchorages,
ancient harbours and the people they meet, they also develop a fascination with
the sea and its wildlife. And, whilst questioning the things we value and the
nature of happiness, this book reveals the growing and sometimes amusing
inter-dependence of two people alone at sea.
This is the sequel to the
popular Dolphins under my Bed, which charted Sandra and David's first long journey: a 2,000-mile
voyage from England, down the Atlantic coast and into the warm waters of the
Mediterranean.

About the Author:

Initially a reluctant sailor, Sandra Clayton fell in love with sailing and the sea, and the urge to write it all down become irresistible. Writing has been her pastime or her job for most of her life, and her output includes an award winning radio play for the BBC.

Review:

This sequel to the popular Dolphins Under My Bed is the saga of a middle-aged British couple who sell up and set sail to the Mediterranean.Clayton is a gifted writer and keen observer of events; her ability to see the humor even in everyday situations will keep you laughing, while her sensitive, evocative descriptions of people, places, and nature will captivate you and make you think seriously about going cruising yourself - now. The book concludes as the Claytons are preparing to sail trans-Atlantic to the Caribbean. We can only hope that the next leg of the journey will be chronicled in another superb book.
Lynda Morris Childress, Cruising World

Everything in this story rang true, from the difficulties and let-downs of English property sales, and the problems of giving up cherished possessions, to the worries of keeping a vessel abroad and the way that our spirits lift when we rejoin her and find that (nearly) all is well.
Non-sailors would not be put off. This is a very approachable book, an easy read. It is centred on sailing but not obsessed by it. The happy sport of watching the inept, the bossy and the rude is captured with humour and precision. All told so well you could have been there yourself.
This is an account of a (slow) voyage, with only an outline map. It is no pilot guide and yet it is more useful. This tells you where you might sail and what you might enjoy. Use charts and pilots to decide for yourself exactly how you will get there. However, things may have changed: this book was written before the Euro. Cruisers in the Med must now be wondering what will happen to mooring fees if the common currency is eventually lost.
As well as the happy observations of folk from the cockpit, there is drama here, as disaster nearly overtakes a long passage. You must get yourself a copy of the book to see how things are resolved. TobyHarris, Cruising Association

Sandra artfully takes the reader from living on the hard in a boatyard through dozens of anchorages, historic sites, colorful villages, and encounters with people of every stripe as well as with dolphins, whales, and other sea life. Sailors will appreciate her take on resolving sailing issues, from dividing up chores on theboat and dealing with provisioning to refilling propane tanks, keeping engines running, navigating when one's autopilot gives up the ghost, and getting caught by, and freeing oneself of, a drift net.
The final chapters of the book bring Sandra and David to Gibraltar. This will be their jumping-off point for the Caribbean, a saga which Sandra tells in A Thousand Miles from Anywhere. I won't give too much away, but there are four more years of sailing ahead of the Claytons from the Caribbean, the Bahamas, America's eastern seaboard, and northeast Canada, thence back across the Atlantic. We can only hope that Sandra continues to share her stories with the rest of us. James Williams, Good Old Boat
