Review:
This new book from sewing and quilting pro, Erin Burke Harris, aims to be the 'go-to reference for today’s quilters and fabric junkies'...and it might accomplish just that. Harris has a fantastic knowledge of fabric, prints, pattern, color, and design, and provides information and instruction in the way of photos, charts, and tables (to help the reader make their own design choices) and guides to quilt settings, piecing styles, color combinations, and fabrics. The book also includes profiles of several contemporary quilters and recounts their 'quilting journeys.' (Quilts Inc. eInsider, 9/18/13)
Want one go-to book with the basic 411 about making quilts? Stop looking. QuiltEssential gives a quick take on nearly every aspect involved in completing a quilt. Can't remember the measurements of a king-size bed? Page 33. Need a translation for on-point? Page 92. Need to turn four small pieces of batting into one large piece? Flip to page 158.
Now, this is not a graduate level quiltmaking course. Erin gives the most important points to move you forward. No single topic gets more than two pages of on-target, easy-to-understand coverage. (There are plenty of other sources for deep exploration of techniques, but this reference is true to its name: essential.) Erin also highlights some amazing q-celebs (Rita Hodge, Anna Maria Horner and Angela Walters, as long as we're name-dropping) in mini-features throughout the book.
Even if you're a thread-hardened vet, this book is worthy of shelf space because it's a great quick reference for things we easily forget. Even better, give it to the next victim you're trying to convert. (Generation Q Magazine, November/December 2013)
Through excellent photography and thoughtful descriptions, author Erin Burke Harris provides a bounty of information every new quilter needs and seasoned quilters can use to refresh their skills. Beginning with fabric types, measurements and calculations, and care tips, this book offers more sophisticated information as it goes on, providing lessons on color, design, shape, and construction. The diagrams and photos are large and clear. As a bonus, readers will enjoy profiles of a handful of quilters influential in today's quilting world. Erin provides the basic information but goes well beyond it in this helpful reference book that quilters will refer to again and again. (Modern Patchwork, Spring 2014)
