Debi Gliori was born in Glasgow and studied design and illustration at Edinburgh College of Art. She has written and illustrated may bestselling books for children, including the much-loved Mr Bear series, No Matter What, Tell Me Something Happy Before I Go to Sleep and The Trouble With Dragons. Debi won the Red House Book Award for Mr Bear to the Rescue, and she has been nominated for the Kate Greenaway medal twice. She lives just outside Edinburgh with her family. From School Library Journal:
PreSchool-K-Mr. Bear is the kind of father who hides behind his newspaper while his wife takes care of the baby-until he involuntarily spends an evening babysitting for their neighbors, the active Grizzly family: Fred, Ted, Fuzz, and the Baby. These four would be a challenge for anyone, let alone a novice. They soon recognize Mr. Bear for the beginner he is: "'I don't think you're a real babysitter,'" the older children say over and over as he shows his incompetence. But, after a bit of practice, he finally gets it right-especially when he yells at naughty Fred, Ted, and Fuzz- and then he goes home to take a more active role in his own parenting. The humor, repetition, and interest in the Grizzlys' mischief will appeal to youngsters. The watercolor-and-ink illustrations are cozy, funny, and full of ursine details. However, the book won't be as much of a crowd-pleaser as Gliori's My Little Brother (Candlewick, 1992): the adult-oriented message is a bit heavy-handed, and the story line creaks a bit before it really gets going. On the whole, an appealing book, but not an essential addition.
