About the Author:

CELIA REES is the author of many acclaimed and bestselling books for young readers including the "Witch Child," "Sorceress," "Pirates!," "Sovay," and "The Fool's Girl," and her books have been translated into more than twenty languages. Celia lives in England. www.celiarees.com

From Booklist:

Three narrators—a young but broken war veteran, his long-suffering little brother, and the driven girl who comes between them—weave a powerful, tragic tale of love and war in Rees’ contemporary British novel. Jaime is infatuated with Caro from the first moment he spots her, though he can hardly believe that this enigmatic, beautiful girl returns his feelings. Their fiery, troubled love affair is all he thinks about, aside from worrying over his mercurial brother, Rob, who returned from Afghanistan with PTSD and a busted leg. But while Caro has genuine feelings for Jaime, her true goal is Rob, whose unpredictable mental state makes him a perfect tool for her anarchist plans to fight violence with violence. Told as a series of flashbacks, the story starts a year after Rob’s funeral, so the novel’s tension lies in watching the inevitable destruction unfold. Each character is distinct and sympathetic, though not necessarily likable, and Rob’s fragmented narrative is particularly affecting. A slightly underplayed ending doesn’t detract from the novel’s lingering sense of discomfort. Grades 9-12. --Krista Hutley

Everyone says that Caro is bad . . . but Jamie can t help himself. He thinks of her night and day and can t believe that she wants to be his girlfriend. Gorgeous, impulsive and unconventional, she is totally different to all the other girls he knows. His sister, Martha, hates her. Jamie doesn t know why, but there s no way he s going to take any notice of her warnings to stay away from Caro. But as Jamie falls deeper and deeper under her spell, he realises there is more to Caro - much more. There are the times when she disappears and doesn t get in touch, the small scars on her wrists, her talk about revolutions and taking action, not to mention the rumours he hears about the other men in her life. And then always in the background there is Rob, Jamie s older brother, back from Afghanistan and traumatised after having his leg smashed to bits there. Jamie wants to help him, but Rob seems to be living in a world of his own and is increasingly difficult to reach. With Caro, the summer should have been perfect . . . but that isn t how things work out in real life, and Jamie is going to find out the hard way. This taut psychological drama is the brilliant new novel from acclaimed Celia Rees. Bookseller Inventory # AA79781408817698
